Blazing saddles

We've been in San Francisco for six days now. It's a wonderful place, notable for its hills everywhere and its panhandlers on many street corners downtown, as well as many interesting sights. We've used the cable cars several times now to get around and enjoyed the wisecracking conductors.

Today we achieved our ambition of cycling over the Golden Gate Bridge. hiring a tandem from Blazing Saddles and set off into the thrilling blue yonder. The bridge was full of couples all saying 'we'll take one of you if you take one of us' so we have several records of the experience. Once in the Marin Headlands we freewheeled down into Sausalito which is a lovely upscale place with a marina full of expensive yachts, and then we cycled along to Mill Valley, another affluent place with a fascinating library housed in the barn in the woods. Finally we cycled along the estuary to Tiburon, where we caught the ferry, along with a large number of other cyclists, back to San Fran.

Earlier this week we visited several stunning museums and galleries. Most notable was the De Young Museum, with really impressive exhibits in a beautifully designed setting and a panoramic view of SF from its tower. We also visited the California Academy of Sciences on Wednesday, which was a mistake as it was Veterans Day, a school holiday, and the place was completely full of families, but it was an excellent natural sciences museum.

We won't be able to get to Yosemite as it's too cold and we don't have time to give it justice so we're going to take it easy over the next few days, ready to embark on the next stage of our adventure, down under.
