We arrived here on Monday morning after an overnight flight and a brief stopover in Hong Kong. Bangkok is everything people have warned us about - extremely hot and humid, crowded, noisy and polluted. It is of course a culture shock for us, as for the first time this trip we have to find our way around streets and roads labelled in Thai script, although they do provide some English alternatives. Luckily our hotel is near the Skytrain route, which is a wonderfully cool way of seeing central Bangkok. We still haven't fathomed out how they work the zone system, so we frequently find we haven't paid enough which means the barriers won't let us out at the destination and the inspector has to ask for more money. It's all very cheap though.
We hired a tuk tuk yesterday to take us to the Grand Palace, an exciting experience whisking through all the traffic. And we also caught one of the canal boat taxis - again exciting as they are fast and splashy and barely stop for you to leap on. Then we used the river boat express and a river ferry so it was a varied day getting around.
We've had a few Thai meals but haven't risked the street sellers yet, of which there are thousands everywhere. We'll be glad to leave on Friday, when we've booked flights to Chiang Mai in the north, having decided that the train would take too long.
