Over the last few days we've stayed at Monpazier, Sarlat and Carennac, all lovely places in the Dordogne and Lot regions, experiencing sun and rain along the way. At Monpazier, a picturesque bastide town, we stayed two nights to avoid cycling through heavy rain and storms, but we were looked after very well by an interesting couple running a chambre d'hote there. And Darren Bent scoring his first goal for England cheered us up enormously (we're able to listen to BBC5 Live on our netbook).
The hills are tiring - mostly we haul the bikes up these on foot, especially as we have heavy panniers. We're trying to decide what we can leave behind next time to reduce the load.
We've had some delightful meals and quaffed a lot of wine. Must reduce our intake when we get back but it seems such a shame not to drink the regional wines each evening while we're here, mostly Bergerac AOC so far.
Last night we were able to practise our French at dinner with a young couple from Nantes who were also cycling and staying at the same place as us. Our header picture shows La Farga in Carennac, where we are staying with Emilie and Vincent and family as we enjoyed this place so much last year. Today we decided to try and walk to Veyrac along the riverside but quickly got lost in the woods and after fighting through brambles and marshy undergrowth decided to cut our losses and return to the village to take advantage of a very tasty tourist menu at a small restaurant run by two guys from Leeds.
We're now trying to plan where to go next while avoiding hills and Sunday deserts.
