Art Deco in Miami South Beach

We're in South Beach now, staying in a stylish Art Deco hotel on Ocean Drive, across the road from a gorgeous beach. We came here on Sunday, using a mixture of taxi, TriRail train and bus. It's around 90 degrees generally so we don't go for a swim until teatime. The water is beautifully warm, with white sandy beaches and iconic lifeguard stations. Then it's cocktails on the verandah before strolling past the fascinating Art Deco hotels, looking at the beautiful people. If it weren't so hot I think we could get used to this and the hotels are surprisingly cheap.

On our last day in Fort Lauderdale we took advantage of a day pass on the water taxi, a bargain at $13 as we could cruise the waterways all day and then use it at night too. We saw lots of homes of the rich and famous and were able to get off wherever we wanted. There were hundreds of posh yachts there for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show - the biggest in the world apparently. The boat crews were full of superlatives which slightly palled after we heard three times how many billions were spent at the boat show. We took the water taxi to the 15th St Fisheries restaurant at night and had a delightful meal overlooking a pontoon with large fish being fed - tarpons. Like a lot of FL restaurants they had live music - this was a guitarist doing covers such as James Taylor and Tom Petty so it suited us fine and we had a magical evening.
