The heat is on

The weather changed in Chicago on Thursday morning, the day we flew off to Miami, becoming cloudy with rain, so it was good to be leaving after a wonderful few days. The flight was fine but carry-on luggage is a big issue in the States as everyone comes aboard with huge trolley cases which fill up the overhead lockers and cause delays in getting ready for take off. This is all because the airlines have started to charge for checking luggage in. We have to check our backpacks in (putting them in special bags to avoid the straps getting caught in the conveyors).

We arrived in Miami at teatime yesterday and then caught the bus shuttle to the Tri Rail station to get on the double decker train up the coast to Fort Lauderdale. We're here for a few days in a hotel along Seabreeze Boulevard, and after a very wet arrival last night it's been hot hot hot today.

We haven't swum in the sea yet - it's too hot at 82 degrees. We took a long walk along the seafront enjoying some welcome breezes as the air is quite humid, and then walked along Los Olas Boulevard into the centre, past all the waterways which have huge boats moored next to houses and apartments. It was a long way and it appears no-one else walks much, if they are not in cars they are jogging, cycling or roller blading. We caught the bus back - these seem to be the province of the old and the poor, unlike Chicago. Interestingly the driver got out and let down a special kind of ramp to enable him to wheel a passenger with a wheelchair on board. A lady with a bike was able to hoist her bike on a rack at the front of the bus outside. Great stuff.

We're planning another stroll later and there's a rather nice cafe along here which has swinging seats which are good for chilling out.
