Hello from the Windy City

We're here in Chicago soaking up the Sunday morning scene after a great breakfast in a trendy place called Yolk.

The AA flight was good, eight hours from Manchester. We were fascinated by the Sky Mall magazine which has acres of ads for items you didn't know you wanted. Intriguingly, several weapons for shooting marshmallows - only one response to this - why??? Lots of things to help your dog climb into your bed, an indoor dog restroom - a special tray for him to wee on so that you don't have to take him out. An inflatable drive-in movie screen for your back yard, also a portable ice rink for your (large) garden. Lots of secret bugging equipment - US paranoia? Awful things for you to put round tree trunks to celebrate your favoured team. DNA family trees for your pet. An instant Feng Shui compass. A laser guided pool cue. An evil looking remote controlled tarantula. A telekinetic obstacle course which harnesses your brainwaves to guide a ball through the course. Loads more.

Arrived at O'Hare slightly early, at 12.45pm, six hours behind UK time, and took the El downtown. At our hotel wonderfully we were rewarded by an upgrade to a junior suite after a little blagging, as the receptionist was so excited about our plans. Very nice, including sumptuous bathrobes.

The hotel wifi is not free so after a rest we tested the internet connection on our netbook at Starbucks and discovered that Sunderland had beaten Liverpool using a beach ball to deflect the only goal - well whatever it takes...

We strolled out along the Magnificent Mile - Michigan Avenue, full of immense cathedrals of conspicuous consumption - Nieman Marcus, Saks, Tiffany, Armani, Cartier etc etc. But the most spectacular sight is the architecture - the Wrigley building, the Chicago Tribune, the Water Tower and more, brilliantly lit. It really is magnificent, especially at night. This morning we paid a visit to Union Station so that I could take a picture of Ralph on the famous stairs - used in the Untouchables etc.

We may take one of the lake cruises this afternoon so more to report later.
